Some folks were so disillusioned with the church that they decided Christianity itself had little to offer! They might keep the trappings of religion, but they looked elsewhere for answers, not directly to God. This was a major, inner choice! For them, religion became a social obligation or opportunity, an elegant tradition, or an insurance policy, rather than a source of real truth or relationship with God. (p 10)There are key words in the above quote from Truthquest that really get my wheels to spinning. It seems to me this choice is ever before us. People confusing the purpose of the church with that of a social club. Going through the motions. Getting caught up in church busyness as a substitute for relationship. Doing what we've always done without seeking depth.
Alternatively, we can dig into the Word, seek Truth, have the courage to stand up even when we're in the minority. We can learn from history and avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.
