IT'S A BOY!!!
No, we didn't get to see the birth.
We are so disappointed. We did math and Spanish, then Destry went out to check on Alice and came back in saying 'her calf is on the ground!'
It wasn't very old--she was still licking him off and she hadn't delivered the afterbirth yet. The pictures don't show it very well, but she has milk/colostrum literally streaming from her teats. That one shown here is the bad quarter, but Alan thinks we'll still be getting 4-6 gallons a day from her. His dad was down on Tuesday and he thinks we'll be getting at least four gallons per milking!! WOW!! Good thing we're splitting it all with another family! Check out the poor girl's udder! It looks like it would pop if you touched it.
It is such a beautiful day for this! She birthed him in the shelter of the barn, but they are both out in the lot soaking up the sunshine. It's currently 48 degrees. We all just had to stand out there, a respectable distance from this protective momma, and give thanks to their Creator!
And is it bad of me to be thinking of the meat in my freezer in a couple years??
