Life Lessons and Pets

Monday, June 01, 2009

First, I'm chuckling that people are teasing me for not blogging lately. We were getting ready for a trip to OH for a wedding, we were on our trip, and recovering from being on the trip, so it's been more than two weeks. So, since a FEW people seem to have missed me, I am setting a goal to blog every day this week! Because I have so much to say, you know! LOL We'll see if anyone really reads and comments on my blog, or if my silence chased y'all away.

Easton and Kiana got new pets--brother and sister kittens.

The one in the front is a boy, and Easton named him 'Pilchard' (yes, you're right, that's the cat's name on "Bob the Builder", the show Easton loves!) The one in the back is a girl and has been named Wendy. Pilchard is very adventurous and sure that everyone loves him and quite a curious and spunky cat. Wendy is a little more hesitant, definitely waiting for her brother to take the lead, but still a curious and fun cat.

These are pretty good cats who seem to really like the children and patiently endure hugs and petting and all the love my children lavish on them. Easton has latched more onto Pilchard while Kiana leans more toward Wendy.

I think it's good for children to have pets so they can learn to take care of them, how to handle animals kindly, and how to be responsible in feeding them. Easton has been really good to feed the cats each morning--it's his 'chore' like the ones Briana and Destry have.

They also provide a great opportunity to share with friends who come over to play, and give them something fun and special to do, as you can see Easton and his little buddy, Mundan, enjoyed the cats when Mundan came to play.

But sadly, pets can provide another life lesson. While we were gone on our trip, some friends were milking the cow and doing the other chores for us. Well, these silly little kittens got a taste for the fresh milk, and got in the barn while milking was going on. Greedy Wendy got too close to the cow trying to get at the milk, and the 800 pound (I'm guessing??) cow's foot was a little too much for a 1-2 pound kitten. So, alas, Wendy died.

These life lessons are sometimes sad to learn, but I think Kiana was oblivious and Easton seemed pretty understanding. We're trying to talk Daddy into letting us get another kitten to love--and keep out of the barn!
